Emergency
Information
Our doctors work hard to ensure that every patient is treated as an individual by creating customised treatment plans and carefully addressing each patient’s unique needs.

What to do in case of an emergency
If you are in severe pain, have had trauma to the mouth or are bleeding, please contact us immediately. If we are unavailable, please see your nearest general dentist or doctor.

Loose bracket
If a bracket is loose, has rotated on the wire or is sticking out get in contact with us as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

Wire irritations
You may try using a cotton bud to gently press the wire flat against the tooth. Orthodontic wax can also provide quick relief. If it continues to irritate, contact us to arrange an appointment.

Elastic buttons/modules
If a small elastic button or module comes off, do not worry, just contact us to organise a replacement as soon as you can.

Lost separator
Most patients lose at least one separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Prevention tips
Wear a mouthguard for contact sport. Avoid hard or crunchy foods that can damage brackets.
Managing discomfort
Tenderness for a day or two after adjustments or aligner changes is normal. This usually settles quickly and can be managed with over the counter pain relief. A warm washcloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness of your jaw. If discomfort lasts longer than a week, please contact us.
Mouth sores or irritation
Orthodontic appliances and elastics may irritate areas that are already sensitive. Some relief options are warm salt water rinses, topical gel such as Bonjela, you can also try orthodontic wax over the irritated area.
Damaged appliances
Occasional breakages can happen. Repeated damage can extend treatment time and may incur additional fees. We use high strength bonding materials, however careful eating and appliance care are essential.

Weekends and holidays
Please note school holidays and festive periods are very busy for emergency repairs. We appreciate your patience during these times and if we have a practice closure you may see your general dentist if necessary.
