The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic assessment by the age of seven.  Early assessment allows orthodontists to detect and address developing problems while a child is still growing. Early treatment can guide jaw development, create space for incoming permanent teeth, correct harmful oral habits, and potentially prevent the need for more complex treatments later in life.

 Some common signs include early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty chewing or biting, persistent mouth breathing, thumb sucking after age five, crowded or misplaced teeth, and jaws that shift or make sounds when opening or closing. If any of these signs are present, an orthodontic evaluation may be beneficial.
